I love hand drawn fonts, and I love art deco fonts but I've never really seen them combined... until now ;) I love the idea of combining the perfection of art deco with the imperfection of my handwriting, sooo I'm doing a whole line of hand-lettered art deco flapper doodle fonts! These are just the first two... I was planning on waiting until I had a bunch before posting any, but after doing these two I was just too excited to wait!

If you're iffy about first class mail making it on time, you can upgrade to Priority for only $3, which is usually delivered in 1-3 days anywhere in the country. I'm in New Jersey, so for anyone on the west coast I highly recommend upgrading.

As usual, I totally screwed things up for Christmas. Last year I did a black friday offer that confused everyone, then changed it mid-sale to be 'easier', but that only confused everyone even more. This year, right before the holiday season I disabled international shipping and deleted some stagnant products.

The international shipping thing is a toughie for me. I'm really tired of being blamed for USPS being slow. At first I deleted the international shipping offer altogether. Then I tried making my standard rate be Global Express ($30) which has guaranteed 3-5 day delivery, but after the first day of adjusting my prices, I realized nobody is going to pay $30 to ship a $25 calendar, let alone a $5 print. I had a long talk with my business manager (aka my dad) last night, and he said that since I make all of my products myself, I can afford to replace them, and if someone is impatient for their package to arrive, I can afford to cut my losses and issue a refund. So as of today, I reinstated international shipping in my shop. But please be aware that the shipping is not too speedy, so if you need something for Christmas please contact me to upgrade to Global Priority ($20) or Global Express ($30)!

As for the stagnant products -- I went through and deleted things that haven't sold in a couple months, but it seems like depleting my inventory had a negative effect on my shop overall, somehow. So today I added everything back, along with a bunch of prints that haven't even been in my shop since 2009!

I also lowered a lot of my prices. Prints are back to their old price of $5 each, and I have a new sale print deal -- 4 prints for $10! I lowered the prices on the calendars and Christmas cards as well.

My main problem is that I know how to draw, but I don't know how to run a business. I get in such a fluster this time of year trying to make my shop better for the holidays, and I always end up screwing it up instead. To make up for my huge blunders, I'm offering some coupons. Kaitlyn from isavirtue downloaded the Hotsy Totsy Christmas album from etsy, and used it for a super unique Christmas card! She burned copies of the discs, then inserted them into flat mailers with my cover art adhered to the front. Then she addressed the backs, and voila! Creative, unique and super thoughtful Christmas cards!

I'm thinking that not a lot of people like the new style I did for my 2012 calendar, so I decided I'd just make two, one in the new style and one featuring my 'classic' cartoony colorful drawings, with bright pink cursive text for the months. It's available in my shop here.

Oh, also my Christmas & winter cards are in stock now as well. I'm selling my 2009 & 2010 designs (why not, right?) and then I'll be adding new ones in the next few weeks, too.

I opened up a society6 shop yesterday! I'm only listing illustrations in my new style (the more detailed drawings) and I opened it under my own name instead of Flapper Doodle because I'm adding some drawings that don't include the girls (like a modified version of my Look for the Silver Lining print)

There are a couple great things about Society6. I love that I can share my work without having to print & ship items myself. As you probably know if you've followed this blog for a while, I have a hate-hate relationship with USPS. Way too many lost packages have totally soured me on shipping my own stuff. So this way I can still sell prints (and more!) without ever having to set foot inside a post office.

Also, I love that they can print my artwork in ways I could never do myself. Big gallery wrapped canvas prints, laptop skins, ipod cases, t-shirts and more! So far I've listed 12 designs but I'm planning on adding a lot more this weekend :)

I made a set of buttons out of my photo booth strip drawing! I'm so smitten with this idea, especially the way that I packaged it, with the buttons sitting on a photo booth strip! :D Available in my shop HERE.

The pendants got one more (and hopefully the last) revamp ... my jewelry supplier discontinued yet another one of my pendant blanks, so I finally switched suppliers (this was the third time she discontinued the one thing I ordered from her, so I figured with my luck the next one I ordered would get discontinued too, lol) and ordered these new ones! I liked my last ones a tiny bit better, but I love these too! I'm ordering like 500 of them so that I don't have to go through this again anytime soon, haha! :) They're available in the shop here -> Eloise and Ramona // Zelda and Becky

I also added four new pocket mirror designs to the shop!! I persist in trying to sell pocket mirrors even though they've never been a big seller for me. But I really think the flapper drawings work well on mirrors, so I'm giving it another go! Maybe one of these designs will finally take off :) They're available in the shop HERE.

Finally, I added personalized bridesmaid pocket mirrors to my shop! They're perfect if you're ordering the matching cards, or they're great on their own as cute little wedding favors! Oh, and I'm busy finishing up my 2012 calendar! I posted a sneak peek on my personal blog last week, if you're interested! It's inspired by Edward Gorey, and I'm super happy with how it's coming along!! Hopefully I'll get to share the finished product by the end of the week. :)

I'm adding temporary tattoos to my shop in the next week or so (exciting!!) so I wanted to design some traditional-tattoo like designs for them. I ended up loving this one so much that it's now available as a print in my shop! It's technically an old drawing (well, about one or two months old) but I think adding the banner & text gives it such a neat look! The words come from a 1920 song by the same name :)

I think I might do this to a few of my drawings with 1920's song lyrics. I'll still have the original available, too, though, in case you want it without the text :) This one is available in my shop here!

With her permission, I copied the poses of the flappers in the original, and even included the corresponding instructions verbatim! And it has a bit of a double purpose.. not only is it a fun art print to hang up, these are real work-outs that you can still do today!

The image above is my current website, which I built myself using iweb. Now I'm using an e-commerce site builder to manage the products in my new shop, and I've run into one tiny problem. I can't have three individual add to cart buttons on each item page. So, I have two options.

Option 1:

Have a landing page for the art prints where you choose which size you want. Each section will have every single print for you to choose from, but if you change your mind about what size you want, you'll have to navigate back to the main Prints page and choose a new size.

Option 2:

A drop down menu where you choose which size you want. The drawback to this option is that you need to select a default size & price. So every print would be priced at $5.00, and you could choose to upgrade to 8x10 or 11x14 for an additional fee. I'm afraid most people wouldn't notice that you could choose a larger size, or would feel mislead by the $5 list price, if I choose this one. (With both options there are individual pages for each item.)

I'm not thrilled about either choice, but ultimately these are my only options. Which would you prefer, and which do you think would make it easier to shop?

I thought I'd try making a little time lapse while I painted tonight! In real time this took me about 4 hours. Unfortunately my camera battery ran out right at the end, so you don't get to see the finishing touches. But you can see the finished painting here.

I'm thinking of doing another painting tomorrow, so I might try a time lapse again, this time with a fully charged camera battery and hopefully some daylight lol ;-)

Mistakes happen -- while I'm packing orders, I often print things upside down, print an item on the wrong type of paper or notice that my printer has run out of ink only AFTER I already printed a whole calendar or set of greeting cards. Rather than throw all of my misprints in the trash, I save them up until I have a giant bundle to offer on etsy. Most of the misprints are salvageable -- if I printed a calendar upside down, all of the images can still be framed! If I printed playing cards on normal copy paper instead of card stock, you can cut them out and frame them instead! Everything here still has some value -- there's even an entire planner that printed on the wrong size paper, with over 50 frameable images!

There are also extras and samples -- things that I printed just to take photos for my etsy listings, but didn't sell, or prints where I way over-estimated the demand and ended up with 20 or more prints that never sold. Everything I misprinted, and every extra I've made in the last year is in this listing!

I'm working on a brand new Flapper Doodle website, and I need some input on one detail. Should the content background be gray or white? I like how the gray looks on the pages for things like printables and paper goods, where all of my images are exactly the same size. But for my art prints, where some images are horizontal and some are vertical, I don't like how that looks against the gray. (I should add, I don't want to make them into squares, I want people to be able to see what orientation the prints will be.)

Which should I pick? I'm completely torn and feedback would be SOOO appreciated! :)

Hi! Hope everyone had a great holiday season & wonderful New Year!

My etsy shop is back open now, although I only have PDFs stocked for the time being. I'm in the process of getting my house ready for sale and I won't be shipping anything while I'm doing that. However, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure that I'll be selling shippable items again even after I've finished. Apparently the post office misplaced an entire carton of my mail and a lot of people didn't get their orders for Christmas -- even though I mailed them with plenty of time to spare. The tracking showed the packages were just sitting in New Jersey from December 17th through January 1st! This isn't the only problem I had with the postal service this Christmas. Some of my packages arrived damaged -- one was ripped open and found blocks away from the delivery address!

When a package doesn't arrive on time, I face the blame, not the post office. Since ultimately I am held accountable for the post office's mistakes, I need to take a step back and re-evaluate my shipping strategies. But I'm facing a bit of a conundrum. Do I go PDF-only and rest assured that I'll never have to deal with lost, stolen or damaged packages again? I could make all orders ship Priority Mail, so that there's tracking AND insurance on every single package, but I doubt that anyone paying $5 for a print would want to pay $4.95 for shipping.

So, I'm not really sure about the direction I'll be taking. Regardless, the shop will be PDF only while I get my house ready, but afterwards I'm really not sure yet.

Michelle Delgado, who owns Brown Bag Vintage & also works at Etsy, has my business card taped to her computer monitor, which happened to be onscreen when she was interviewed for the Etsy segment that aired tonight! Thank you SO much to Michelle for the heads up -- it was so neat seeing my little flappers get a moment on national tv! :D

You can see each of the drawings that accompany each week, as well as the extras included at the back of the book, and the month-at-a-glance pages at the beginning. Eloise dolls & new cosmetic bags!

The Eloise dolls come in two sizes - mini (8") and large (13"). They're made from professionally printed thick cotton fabric, sewn by me and stuffed with polyfill. The backs of the dolls have assorted patterened fabrics (polka dots.. stripes.. pink) and since I don't use a pattern for cutting them out, each one is truly one of a kind! And (FINALLY!) the cosmetic bags are back -- new and improved cosmetic bags, that is! These are more like traditional cosmetic bags, and less like pencil cases. They'll fit all of your odd shaped makeup do-dads like mascara, lipstick and eyeshadow without looking bulky. They're handmade by me, with a pink zipper, printed fabric and soft white lining. They measure approx. 6" x 2" x 3". Available in my shop HERE.

2011 date book/planner

The 2011 date book/planner is now available! It's very hefty & includes anything and everything you'll need for organization next year. It includes: month-at-a-glance pages, with holidays and special dates, week-at-a-glance pages with a different flapper doodle drawing for each week of the year, a complete address book, an important dates section, over 25 plain pink pages for doodling, and a fun 1920's fact section. The calendar is printed on 65 lb smooth white stock and spiral bound. The front and back covers have plastic protectors and the planner comes sealed in a clear archival plastic bag. It measures 6.5" x 6" when closed, or 6.5" x 12" when open.

I've had maybe 5 out of my 1,500+ sales use the coupon that I include with every order. Right now I offer 20% an order of $15 or more, and in the past I've also offered $5 off $15 and 10% off your entire order. None of these have worked. Flapper Doodle activity book!

I had SO much fun making this book! I've always loved activity books and even though I came up with the puzzles and word games inside, I had a ball filling them in and playing them myself! My family and I did the Mad Libs games, and I timed each of them on the "spot the differences" game (my mom came in first, brother second, dad last)

My mom proof-read the book for me, and in my secret code game (I provide a key, and you have to decode a message) I had written "wewe" instead of "were" .. my mom and I were laughing so hard when she found that typo that we were actually crying! Needless to say, the words are all correct now :)

compact mirrors, new pendants and a giveaway, oh my!!!

Next -- compact mirrors!! These are very different from the mirrors that I sold last year, which were basically buttons with a mirrored back. These are actual compacts, that open to two mirrors on the inside: one normal and one magnifying. They're really substantial pieces and not flimsy like most pocket mirrors. As someone who throws things in my purse and rummages through the clutter on a daily basis, I need a mirror that can be knocked around a lot & these seem to fit the bill! Available in my shop here.

I've also redesigned (again) the BFF telephone pendant sets! I have two sets of the old ones left, and I've reduced the price to $10 a set since I'm discontinuing them. This is what they used to look like, with a really tiny hook and saw-tooth edges. (The remaining sets are available here).

I ran out of business cards last week, and rather than re-order a bunch of standard cards that 9 times out of 10 probably get thrown away with the packaging, I thought I'd get inventive and try something new! These business cards can be used as a bookmark, or a cute little trinket to hang up on the fridge, filing cabinet or inspiration board! On the back you'll find all of my flapper doodle links.
