happy (early) halloween!

This is (tentatively) the October drawing for my 2014 calendar. Until I make my final decision, it's also a new art print in my shop.. perfect for seasonal decorations this time of year! :)

I've been having a serious creative block lately. I have so many drawings and projects that I want to finish (I haven't even finished one single drawing for my 2014 calendar yet -- I erase everything I start!) but nothing is coming out the way I see it in my head. I just don't draw as often anymore. I used to draw daily and now I draw every few months. I hate that! Not only does it mean that I have less art in my shop, but whenever I pick up the pen and paper, I feel rusty.

Anyway, I decided to just put aside all of my to-do-list projects and draw for fun. No erasing or starting over, just work on a drawing until it's finished and that's that. And I really love what I came up with! I might do a couple more before attempting to tackle my big projects.. maybe the practice will help me feel a little more confident.

This drawing is based on a 1920's pictorial guide to dancing the Charleston. I call it "Eloise swept him off his feet" and the prints are available in my etsy shop here!

two new illustrations!

I've finally been in the mood to draw again lately. I remember when I first started Flapper Doodle 4 years ago (FOUR YEARS AGO!) I used to draw a new illustration almost every day. I guess it's a good thing I lost steam though or else I'd have almost 1500 drawings in my shop now! ;)

The first drawing was inspired by a photo of one of my favorite bloggers, Solanah from Vixen Vintage. You can view her original post here!

This drawing was loosely inspired by a photo of Fay Wray (you can view the original here) which also inspired the title of the piece, "It was beauty killed the beast."from her most famous movie, King Kong. I love the idea of using poses from vintage stills and photos and then kind of flapper-doodle-izing them.

I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night

Every week on my other blog, Scathingly Brilliant, I do a post called "star stuff" about science, astronomy, etc. Last week I posted an image with this quote, which was attributed to Galileo. A reader brought it to my attention that it's a frequent misquote, actually from a poem by Sarah Williams. Anyway, I was so in love with these words that I decided to revamp this drawing to include them. I still have the original (sans quote) available in my shop, but I love how it looks with the text! It's available as an 8x10 print here, and I'll be adding 4x6 soon too!

My heart belongs to my cat

I know it's early, but I'm thinking about doing a cat themed calendar for 2013 (as an extra option, I'd still have a regular one for non-cat fanatics lol) .. speaking of calendars, my 2012 one was featured on the HGTV blog (!!!) this week, so that was pretty exciting!

Exercises for Women

I recently saw two vintage 1920's exercise manuals in SurrenderDorothy's etsy shop, and just *had* to illustrate them! With her permission, I copied the poses of the flappers in the original, and even included the corresponding instructions verbatim! And it has a bit of a double purpose.. not only is it a fun art print to hang up, these are real work-outs that you can still do today!

For the first time in over a year, I'm offering some originals for sale. The first two are available in my etsy shop now -- Eloise auditions for The Follies, and Ramona waits for the guests to arrive. They're both acrylic on 9" x 12" canvas board, and $50 each SOLD. I'm not entirely sure yet if I'll be doing prints of these (and if I do, they will probably only be available through my Flapper of the Month club) so the paintings are most likely going to be the only version you can purchase.
