2014 calendar + Christmas cards!

Today I FINALLY listed my 2014 calendar in the shop! I can't believe how long it took me to finish it this year, but I'm really happy with how it came out, so I'm glad I didn't rush. The calendar is available printed here and as a printable PDF here. I'll be listing all of the new drawings as prints later today!

I also decided to turn the drawing for June into a Christmas card, it just seemed so warm and cozy! The greeting reads "Wishing you a storybook Christmas" and they come in packs of five cards here.

new printable!

I have a new seasonal printable in the shop! I'm kind of incredibly smitten with this one!! Each card is designed to look like a silent movie title card. It even has a grainy black background to mimic the look of 80 year old film. With white hand-drawn lettering and title-card inspired decorative elements it's the perfect decoration for a classy Halloween! It's available in my etsy shop for $5 as an instant download here.

happy (early) halloween!

This is (tentatively) the October drawing for my 2014 calendar. Until I make my final decision, it's also a new art print in my shop.. perfect for seasonal decorations this time of year! :)

new drawing!

I've been having a serious creative block lately. I have so many drawings and projects that I want to finish (I haven't even finished one single drawing for my 2014 calendar yet -- I erase everything I start!) but nothing is coming out the way I see it in my head. I just don't draw as often anymore. I used to draw daily and now I draw every few months. I hate that! Not only does it mean that I have less art in my shop, but whenever I pick up the pen and paper, I feel rusty.

Anyway, I decided to just put aside all of my to-do-list projects and draw for fun. No erasing or starting over, just work on a drawing until it's finished and that's that. And I really love what I came up with! I might do a couple more before attempting to tackle my big projects.. maybe the practice will help me feel a little more confident.

This drawing is based on a 1920's pictorial guide to dancing the Charleston. I call it "Eloise swept him off his feet" and the prints are available in my etsy shop here!

road trip drawing #1: new jersey

Right now I'm currently back in my home state of New Jersey, regrouping and trying to figure out a more organized way of continuing my road trip. I didn't plan very well before I left so I ran into a lot of obstacles along the way. Live and learn :) I'm just going to research a little better and book hotels in advance before we set out on the road again.

Anyway, I did finish the first drawing in my road trip series! It's (of course) my home state of New Jersey :D My favorite part of the state is the shore, so I decided to pay homage to one of the long-standing traditions in Atlantic City -- the Miss America pageants which started in 1921. As one of those girls who dreads shopping for swimsuits, I wish they still looked like this! ;)

The drawing is available in my shop here.

two new illustrations!

I've finally been in the mood to draw again lately. I remember when I first started Flapper Doodle 4 years ago (FOUR YEARS AGO!) I used to draw a new illustration almost every day. I guess it's a good thing I lost steam though or else I'd have almost 1500 drawings in my shop now! ;)

The first drawing was inspired by a photo of one of my favorite bloggers, Solanah from Vixen Vintage. You can view her original post here!

This drawing was loosely inspired by a photo of Fay Wray (you can view the original here) which also inspired the title of the piece, "It was beauty killed the beast."from her most famous movie, King Kong. I love the idea of using poses from vintage stills and photos and then kind of flapper-doodle-izing them.

Both prints are available in 4x6 and 8x10 in my etsy shop here!

My heart belongs to my cat

New drawing available in my shop! Also available on iphone cases, laptop skins & shirts in my society6 shop here. I know it's early, but I'm thinking about doing a cat themed calendar for 2013 (as an extra option, I'd still have a regular one for non-cat fanatics lol) .. speaking of calendars, my 2012 one was featured on the HGTV blog (!!!) this week, so that was pretty exciting!
